About your bike tour

This one week bike shows us why Germany is such an exciting place to visit these days.

Our bike tour heads from Berlin, Germany's exciting capital, to Dresden, an elegantly restored gem set along the beautiful banks of the Elbe River. and surrounded by a charming river.

Along the way, we celebrate Germany's finest beer garden culture, stay in top-level hotels & inns and cycle through one of Germany's most beautiful regions.

We pedal through the fascinating Spreewald, a nature preserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site with traditional villages unchanged for centuries. While there, we stay in a castle-hotel and enjoy an evening private gondola ride.

We also visit the historic cities of Meißen, Pirna, ride to Moritzburg and Pillnitz castles and cycle to the spa town of Bad Schandau, on the border with the Czech Republic.

We've carefully selected the accommodations to be a pleasure to come home to after a full day's ride. The hotels include historic buildings in town centers, palaces and top quality guest houses. We'll dine in carefully selected restaurant highlighting the finest in German and Bohemian cuisine.

What we love

  • sipping a fresh local beer in one of the countless beer gardens along the Elbe River
  • cycling amid the stunning cliffs of "Saxony Switzerland"
  • the exciting energy of Berlin
  • the inspiration from seeing how Dresden has blossomed back to one of Europe's most elegant small cities

What to know

  • most of the cycling is along clearly marked, car-free dedicated bike paths
  • the tour heads through Brandenburg and Saxony, two regions that were part of East Germany and are undiscovered gems even for many Germans

Travel destinations on the map

Day 1: Berlin (Berlin)

Berlin

Arrive in Berlin. After checking into the hotel in the heart of the city, head out to take in the energy of one of the world's most exciting yet relaxing capital cities.

Overnight in Berlin.

Day 2: Potsdam (Brandenburg)

Berlin to Potsdam

From Berlin, we pedal to Potsdam, the elegant city just outside Berlin and ride along it's many lakes dotted with castles and villas.

As Berlin's wealthy neighbor, "Potsdam was always a strange mix of nations, a very open-minded, cosmopolitan place,” according to the fashion designer Wolfgang Joop, who was born there.

We visit Sanssouci, the summer palace of Fredrick the Great, the king of Prussia, and stroll through the impressive gardens. Potsdam has twelve palaces we can cycle to and there are countless cafes and beer gardens for tasty breaks along the way.

Overnight in Potsdam.

Day 3: Lübbenau (Brandenburg)

Potsdam to the Spreewald

Today we're off to one of the most fascinating (and undiscovered) parts of Germany - the Spreewald. Imagine if the bayou in Louisiana was settled by the Germans: beautiful traditional villages set along countless ancient canals amid a nature preserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After breakfast we take a private shuttle to the Spreewald. Then we're off for a pleasant bike ride on dedicated bike paths through dense forests along the canals. There are plenty of charming beer gardens and cafes to take breaks and chances to stroll through the villages virtually unchanged for centuries. In the Spreewald, the mail is still delivered by gondola and there are almost no machine-driven boats allowed. There's no wonder the Spreewald is one of Berlin and Dresden's most popular weekend getaway spots.

We overnight in a castle-hotel in Lübbenau and enjoy a glass of wine or beer on a private gondola ride in the evening.

Day 4: Dresden (Saxony)

Moritzburg Castle, Meissen and Dresden

After breakfast, we take a private shuttle to Moritzburg, the baroque castle built in 1542, surrounded by lakes and forests.

We cycle around the castle gardens and stop in at the beer garden beautifully located on the garden lake, next to a small palace. Or we can taste some local pastries at the castle cafe.

From there, we take another short shuttle drive to Meissen, renowned for its famous porcelain.

From Meissen, we cycle down the Elbe River to Dresden. We can stop in some of the countless beer gardens along the river.

Our hotel is in a castle overlooking the Elbe River, directly in Dresden. We enjoy dinner at the castle and have a drink in the beer garden at the castle next door, with stunning views of the Elbe River and the city below.

Day 5: Bad Schandau (Saxony)

Morning in Dresden, Stolpen or Boat Ride to Bad Schandau

In the morning, we take a tour of Dresden and visit the famous Semper opera house, Zwinger palace and Frauenkirche, rebuilt after being completely destroyed after the bombing at the end of World War II.

Next we can either take a beautiful back-country bike path built along an old rail line through the ancient town of Stolpen, where we can visit the castle at the top of the hill. Or we can take a private boat ride up the Elbe River through Saxony Switzerland.

Either way, our destination today is Bad Schandau, a relaxed spa town near the Czech border. Here we enjoy dinner and overnight at our hotel along the river.

Day 6: Dresden (Saxony)

Saxony Switzerland to Dresden

We ride through Saxon Switzerland today, a beautiful landscape with cliffs, castles and old fishing villages turned into spa towns around the turn of the century.

We cycle picturesque by Pirna and visit the castle overlooking town, cycle through the spa towns of Rathen and Wehlen. We taste local brews at beer gardens overlooking the Bastei, the spectacular rock formation overlooking the river and Königstein, the strategic fortress dating back to 1233.

We head back to Dresden to our castle hotel where we celebrate our last night with a visit to the beer gardens in the Neustadt, Dresden's lively bohemian part of town.

Day 7: Dresden (Saxony)

After breakfast, our bike tour comes to an end.

We hope you had a wonderful time in one of Germany's friendliest regions. Auf Wiedersehen!
